In the Living Room:
Go Big, or Go Home
We promise, the larger the rug, the bigger your space will look! If a rug is too small, it will dwarf the room and not be proportionate to the space.
- At least all front legs should be on the rug
- Centre your rug using a focal point (light fixture, mantel, coffee table, etc)
- The rug should have at least 6" on either side of the furniture
- At least 12 to 18" of floor should be showing around the room
In the Dining Room:
Leave Room for Maneuvering
Ensure that your rug is centered under the table and made of a material that you will be comfortable with cleaning.
- All of the dining chairs should be on the rug around the table
- You should aim to have room to move your chair in and out comfortably without getting caught on the rug (at least 8" all around)
- At least 12 to 18" of floor should be showing around the room
In the Bedroom:
Use Your Bed Size as a Guide
We always recommend using a rug in the bedroom to offer a cozy feeling through the room (and underfoot!).
KING BED:
– The typical rug size for a King bed is 9x12
- Aim to leave at least 8” of space from the nightstands to the beginning of the rug.
– The rug should extend 12" past the end of the bed
QUEEN BED:
– The typical rug size for a Queen bed is 8x10
- Make sure your nightstands are not sitting on the rug
– Make sure the rug has at least 8” of space on the sides of the bed
Common Questions
DO I NEED A RUG PAD?
Big fat Y-E-S! They extend the life of your rugs, help keep them in place and offer additional cushion underfoot. We recommend this one.
SHOULD I PUT A RUG UNDER MY DINING TABLE?
We always encourage a rug under the dining table to add an additional layer and break up the "wood table on wood floor" look. It is an opportunity to add colour, pattern and texture to a room. Worried about clean-up? Go with a PET for the highest cleanability!
I LOVE MY FLOORS AND DON'T WANT TO COVER THEM. DO I REALLY NEED A RUG?
YES! You will still be able to see the floors in all of their glory if you keep to our rug size recommendations (noted above). Rugs will pull the whole room together, and take that hollow sound away.
HOW DO I LAYER A RUG?
We love the way a layered rug can look. For best results, layer a patterned rug over a jute. The top layer should be 2/3 the size of the bottom rug.
