3 Fall-Ready Combos to Perk Up Your Pillow Palette

3 Fall-Ready Combos to Perk Up Your Pillow Palette

Out of all the seasons, we'd argue that home textiles become the most important in the fall. That desire to cozy up as the cool weather moves in is fulfilled most easily by feathering our nests (metaphorically, of course). Essential to this (in our homes, at least): Swapping out pillows and throw blankets for a fresh palette of warming fall colour and texture.

In designing Rainsford Company's Fall 2021 Pillow Collection, creative director Andrea Doxey committed to our go-to classics: Bold but traditional florals, worldly block prints, simple stripes, and oh-so-touchable fabrics. The collection's colours range from rich and moody to light and airy for a refreshed spin on autumnal style.

A returning favourite: The Royal Velvet collection offers six beautiful, rich colours in two sizes: a standard 20" by 20" square and a versatile 14" by 20" lumbar. These plush solids are the ideal complement to any fall or winter pillowscape.

“Changing out pillows is like changing your outfit — it can instantly alter the whole look & feel of a room, putting you in a fresh new mood.”

— Andrea Doxey

The best way to visualize the impact these beauties can make on a space is the see them in action. Below, we styled three different rooms in Andrea's home with three completely different looks from the fall pillow collection. Whether its your principal bedroom, a formal living room, or a cozy sitting area, a simple pillow swap is all it takes to refresh your space for the season.

But first, a quick recap of our favourite formula for building a beautifully coordinated pillow combo:

PILLOW STYLING 101 — A Foolproof Formula for Effortless Coordination

1.
Choose a statement-making hero piece with a bold pattern.

2.
Accent with small prints in a complementary colour or neutral.

3.
Add in supporting solids or stripes (or both!) to complete the look.

Of course, like with all decorating guidelines, these "rules" are made to be broken. Feel free to mix things up and get creative with colour, pattern, and textile combos. The best thing about our seasonal pillow collections: We've done the hard work ahead of time to coordinate a collection of fabrics and colour that complement one another in endless combinations, so you can mix and match to your heart's content.

Now, on to the combos!

Combo # 1: Blue & Gold

THE GOAL:

To bring cozy depth to the blank canvas of an off-white bedroom with the addition of traditional fall colours. Breakfast in bed on a chilly Sunday morning, anyone?

WHY IT WORKS:

In this jewel-toned take on a complementary colour scheme, deep navy blue and rich golden yellow play off each other to bring out each other's warmth. The Ivy Blockprint's cream-coloured pattern adds a bright hit to the dark background, tying in the colour of the white coverlet. The wide but soft cabana stripe of the Eva Pillow acts as a grounding backer, transitioning from the light upholstered headboard to the darker-hued textiles. Up front, the little golden velvet lumbar is the piece-de-resistance, adding just the right amount of contrast and luxurious texture.

Combo # 2: Autumn Skies

THE GOAL:

To create a serene and classic living room scene that feels right for the season, but not over-the-top.

WHY IT WORKS:

The Teak Hydrangea pillow is the star of the show here. Its bold floral pattern uses an unexpected palette of chocolate brown and creamy tones, offset by a hint of steely blue-grey. The Highway Stripe pillow's delicate ticking stripe is a perfect match, using the same combo of cream, brown, and soft blue. To pick up the subtle blues even more, we added a velvet lumbar in a muted sky blue, and accessorized with a painted porcelain Chinoiserie vase in classic blue and white. For texture, an ivory cotton throw blanket in a coarse knit finished with a raw edges add a relaxed touch.

Combo # 3: All Natural

THE GOAL:

To take the "organic minimalism" trend and give it a lived-in, easy-going look, with a hint of refinement.

WHY IT WORKS:

A universal truth: Earth tones are classic in any context. Here, we embraced simplicity and let nature guide the palette. Starting with the white-walled surroundings and plenty of natural woven texture thanks to Andrea's rattan chair and striped jute rug (coming soon to the shop!), we added pillows in deep moss green, soft beige and creamy ivory. Black accents in natural materials — like the iron candlesticks and black marble chain — give the room a finished touch that fits the theme.

(Did you notice? This set up uses the exact same three pillow styles as Combo #1 — the Eva Stripe, the Ivy Blockprint, and a Royal Velvet lumbar — but in different colours. We love how a simple colour swap can give a completely different look!)
