Black Winged Stilt 1778

This watercolour and pen drawing of a grey heron was made by Robert Jacob Gordon on his 1778 exploration of South Africa. Through the discovery of his journals, we see the breathtaking detail of each bird reflected through the eyes of a true explorer with a love of nature.
