In the 17th to early 19th century, it was customary for young European aristocrats to take a Grand Tour of Europe to round out their formal education and development. They would visit major cultural centres, learning about history, language, and the culture of those areas. Intaglios were popular souvenirs during Grand Tours, acting as reminders of their travels and the amazing artwork and history they encountered during their adventures. Inspired by traditional Intaglios carved into gems and semi-precious stones, the plaster recreations often depicted scenes from Classical Mythology or historical scenes and individuals.
Our collection of Intaglios features both mythological and historical figures. Each one is hand-cast and gilded with fine gold filigree along the upper edge, framing the carved images and making them truly unique pieces. Each grouping is mounted on a linen texture background in a variety of colour options and is framed with a wide, raised matte and gilded framespace, giving them even more elegance and luxury. With our wide variety of arrangements and different combinations of Intaglios, you’re sure to find the perfect groupings for you.
