Welcome to The Neighbourhood! Edition 1.0

Welcome to our new blog feature calledThe Neighbourhood! Some of you may know that I named Rainsford Company after the street where my husband, Steve, and I purchased our first home in the Toronto Beaches neighbourhood. We’ve since moved west, but Rainsford Road and our old neighbourhood will forever be etched in our hearts. I am excited to be launching a more personal element of the blog called The Neighbourhood, where I will chat about all things design, life and shop-happenings on a regular basis!

The Countdown is On!

I’m officially 36 weeks and counting down the days until we meet our little baby boy. At our last appointment our doctor asked whether we had our bags packed and car seat installed? “Ummm… not yet”, we said nervously. Needless to say, we immediately went home and checked a bunch of things off the list and are now feeling more prepared! Getting ready for baby number 2 while running Rainsford Company and running after our 3 year old toddler, Margot, has meant we’ve been slower to get things fully ready this time around.

One of the projects that has come together quite nicely, however, is our baby-boy’s nursery. I decided to go with my favourite shade of grey-blue called Benjamin Moore Seattle Grey and mix in shades of browns, whites and camel. Below is a roundup of pieces that I’ve picked for his space.

Hot tip: I had a terrible time finding in-stock hardware for his custom drapery panels (as if he will care about that! ha!). I could find component parts in various colours, but nothing in the matteblack I was after. I purchased what I could find in black and sprayed the rings, bracketsand finials in a matte black spray paint. They went from bright red to black in a few short minutes and saved me a pretty penny too!

Products: Rug, Light Fixture, Pillows (Walter G pillows coming to the shop this fall!), Artwork, Lamp, Crib - West Coast Kids

Paint Colours: Benjamin Moore Seattle Grey (walls), Benjamin Moore Simply White (doors + trim)

First Impressions

After getting back from Charleston in April (where they have no shame in painting wood!) I was inspired to paint our front door a colour that felt more like “us”. Although I liked the rich tone of the existing wooden door, I felt the dark door was lost in a sea of dark brick and never really popped.

Exterior paints seem trickier than interior ones given that the light changes so dramatically throughout the day, so I tried out a multitude of colours before I landed on Sherwin Williams - Naval. I just love how the hardware pops against the door and the blue feels way more on-brand for the Doxey family!

Hot Tip: My one piece of advice for selecting the perfect colour? Sample paint pots. A mere $5 at your local home improvement store for a test pot will save you time and money in the end to get the colour right!

From Left to Right: Sherwin Williams Indigo, Sherwin Williams Naval, Benjamin Moore Hale Navy,

Sherwin Williams Salty Dog, Benjamin Moore Van Dusen Blue

Next up? Selecting new outdoor sconces to flank the door. These are the three I have my eye on!
